Passover Hotel Programs Predict 2012 will be a “Comeback Year”

New York…When operators of Passover hotel programs speak of the “good ol days,” they are probably referring to the years 2000-2007, after which the lingering recession cut deeply into their businesses and profits. This year, say the operators, interest is well ahead of the last few years, which gives them hope that the lull may be over. But even those that seemed to have little trouble filling resorts all over the world, hope that a surge of reservations will end the last-minute bargain hunting that cuts into their profit. While most of the programs are familiar repeat programs there are several new ones, one even at the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort in Phuket, Thailand. Another program is slated for the Valamar Dubrovnik President Hotel. Estimates of the number of Americans who spend Passover in hotels range from 40,000 – 70,000 with some putting the dollar amount at close to $1 billion. One notable absentee this year will be The Chevra, a program considered by many as the “mother of all Passover programs.” There were conflicting explanations as to why the program opted out this year with many of its participants headed for Cancun, Mexico. The optimism which seems to be shared by many of the operators is that while the recession may still be a factor, “more and more people have come to grips that change will not come soon.” In other words, said one, “life must go on.” Israeli hotels are making a concerted effort to attract the Americans with deep discounts and free amenities, such as a few major meals.
